Aga Khan Foundation International Scholarship Programme 2021

  The Aga Khan Foundation offers a limited number of Aga Khan scholarship each year for postgraduate studies to excellent students from selected developing countries who have no other means to fund their studies, in order to develop effective scholars and leaders and prepare them for employment, primarily within the Aga Khan Development Network.  Scholarships are awarded on a 50% scholarship: on a 50% loan basis through a competitive application process once annually in June or July. 

The institution prioritizes applications for courses at the master’s level but is willing to consider applications for doctoral programs, only in the case of high achieving students who are highly recommended for doctoral studies by their professors and who need a PhD to achieve their professional goals (academic or research).

  Applications for short-term courses are not considered;  Nor applications from students who have already started their course of study.

  Eligible Countries for Aga Khan Scholarship

  The Foundation accepts applications from citizens of the following countries: Bangladesh, India, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Tajikistan, Kyrgyzstan, Syria, Egypt, Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, Madagascar and Mozambique.  In France, Portugal, the United Kingdom, the United States of America, and Canada, applications are accepted from those who are originally from one of the above-mentioned developing countries, are interested in development studies and who have no other means of financing their education.  Preferences for applicants under the age of 30.

  Eligibility criteria for the Aga Khan Foundation Scholarships 2021

  • All students belonging to the above eligible countries can apply for this scholarship.
  • The candidate should have an excellent academic profile.
  • The candidate should not be able to support funding for his studies.
  • The candidate must obtain admission to a university or reputable program.
  • The candidate will also be selected on the basis of his extracurricular activities, achievements, and career plans.
  • The candidate must have relevant field experience.

  • The candidate must be 30 years old or younger.

  Aga Khan Scholarship coverage

  The Aga Khan Foundation International Scholarships offer the recipient the following benefits:

   The Foundation assists students with tuition fees and living expenses only.  Funding is provided for PhD programs only for the first two years of study, after which students are expected to find alternative sources of assistance.

  Financial aid is provided according to students’ needs.  Applicants are requested to make every effort to obtain funding from other sources as well, so that the amount requested from the Foundation can be reduced to a minimum.  Preference will be given to those who have secured some financing from alternative sources.

  Terms of the loan

  Half of the grant amount is considered as a loan that must be repaid with a 5% annual service fee.  A guarantor is required to sign the loan agreement.  The payback period is five years, beginning six months after the study period funded by the Aga Khan Foundation.

  The Foundation assists students with tuition fees and living expenses only.  Travel cost is not included in the Aga Khan Foundation Scholarships.  Funding for PhD programs is only provided for the first two years of study, after which students are expected to find alternative sources of assistance.  Financial aid is offered according to students’ needs, but an ISP should be considered a lender of last resort.  Applicants are requested to make every effort to obtain funding from other sources as well, so that the amount requested from the foundation can be reduced to a minimum.  Preference is given to those who have been able to secure some financing from alternative sources.

  Selection criteria for Aga Khan Scholarship

  Candidates will be selected on the basis of:

  • Consistently excellent academic records
  • Real financial need
  • Admission to a reputable university or program of study
  • Suitability of the field of study to the areas of focus of the institution
  • Candidates are also evaluated on:
  • Demonstrate thoughtful and coherent educational and employment plans
  • Their interests and achievements outside the curriculum
  • The possibility of achieving their goals
  • The likelihood of success in a foreign academic environment

  Note: Applicants are expected to have some years of work experience in their field of interest.

  Registration deadline

  The deadline for submitting fully completed applications is March 31, although in some countries internal deadlines may be earlier for processing and reviewing applications.  Applicants are advised to contact the local offices to find out about internal deadlines and requirements as they may differ from country to country.  Late or incomplete applications will not be accepted.

  Please follow the following application instructions to apply for the Aga Khan Foundation International Scholarships:

  • You must have an offer to study at the chosen university.
  • Obtain the application form from the offices of the Aga Khan Foundation or the Aga Khan Education Councils / Services in your country of current residence.
  • Send the completed application to the entity from which it was obtained.  They should not be sent to Geneva.
